31.8.2008 - yhä ylöspäin

Syntymäpäiväkseni sain komean kutsun viettämään pitkää viikonloppua Shasta-vuorella, peti-puuromajoituksessa. Perjantaina iltapäivällä lähdimme ajamaan pohjoista kohti ja liki viiden tunnin ajomatkan aikana maisema vaihtui selkeästi tasaisesta viljelysmaasta metsäiseksi ja vuoristoiseksi. Mount Shasta City on reipas pikku kylä vuoren juurella ja majoituspaikastamme on komeat näkymät vuorelle.

For my birthday, I got a fancy invitation to spend a long weekend at Mount Shasta at a bed and breakfast. On Friday afternoon we started driving north and during that five hours the landscape changed from flat hot farming land to something a lot more foresty and mountaneous. Mt. Shasta City is a lively little town at the foot of the mountain, and from our B&B we have a grand view of the mountain.

Reissun ainoa hikka on se, että majapaikassamme kaikki paitsi me ovat täällä perhehäitä varten. Jostain syystä siitä seuraa, että ihmiset eivät ymmärrä lukita kylppärin ovea ollessaan siellä, eivät viitsi lukea jääkapissa olevista tavaroista kenen ne ovat, ja etsiessämme mukavan viileää istumapaikkaa ensimmäisenä iltana päärakennuksen patiolta kysyvät kovaan ääneen: Onks nää tyypit täällä vieraita? The only hitch in the whole trip is that everybody else at the B&B is here for a family wedding. For some reason this means that people don't necessarily close or lock bathroom doors when they are in, can't be bothered to read whose stuff they're eating from the fridge and on the first night when we were looking for a nice cool place on the porch to sit for a while commented out loud: Are these guys guests? Luckily, there is plenty to do in the area.



Ensimmäisenä päivänä kävimme kylällä, ja löysimme Brianille uudet retkisandaalit ja hyvät sortsit. Kaupasta neuvoivat vielä hyviä retkeilyreittejä, ja päätimme heti lähteä suoraan Mt. Shastalle, päivä kun oli aika kuuma ja vuorella viileämpää. Ajoimme suoraan n. 7000 jalan (2134 m) korkeuteen, ilmoittauduimme päiväretkeläisiksi, ja lähdimme kävelemään metsäpolkua ylöspäin. Maisemat olivat aina vain hienommat, ja noin 8000 jalan (2438) metrin korkeudessa löysimme vuorimökin, ja siellä päivystävän retkeilyasiantuntijan. Oli hyvä huilata hetki viileässä ja kuulla hiukan paikan historiaa. Päätimme sitten vielä jatkaa hiukan ylöspäin maisemia katsomaan. Mökiltä lähti vaellusreitti kohti huippua, ja lähdimme lampsimaan kivipolkua ylöspäin. Kipusimme aina vain vähän lisää, kun tuosta kulman takaa olisi kuitenkin vielä paremmat näkymät. Lopulta pääsimme pienen nyppylän päälle, jota parempia maisemia ei enää voinut toivoa, ja lähdimme sitten alaspäin.



On our first day we went into town, found Brian a pair of new hiking sandals and a good pair of shorts. They advised us on some hiking options, and we decided to tackle Mt Shasta right away - the day was hot and on the mountain it would be cooler. We drove up to about 7000 feet, signed up for a day hike and then took off on the foresty path. The views got better and better, and at about 8000 feet we found an old mountain cabin with a hike advisor on duty. It was good to rest in the cool shade and hear more about the history of the area. We decided to hike a little further to see better views. One of the trails headed for the summit, and we followed that up the stone path. A little more, just up there, we climbed further and further to see even more breathtaking views. Finally we concluded our tour at the top of a mini-peak - the views just could not get much better than that - and then turned back down.



Illallisvaihtoehtoja miettiessämme tuli mieleen katsoa naapurikylästä vaihtoehtoja, ja Brian löysikin naapurista Dunsmuirin kaupunigsta hyvänkuuloisen paikan. Pääsimme istumaan pihalle viiniköynnösten alle, tarjoilija oli erinomainen ja ruoka hyvää ellei sitten taivaallista. Brianin pihvi oli ihmeellisen maukas - eikä hinta kokonaisuudessaan ollut lainkaan paha. Ja annoskootkin oli niin hyvin sovitettu, että vaikka söimme jälkiruoan, ei ollut yhtään ähky olo. Ihana päivä sai oikein juhlallisen huipun!



When thinking about dinner options, it occurred to us to see what the neighbouring towns had to offer. Brian found at the next town of Dunmuir a place that sounded really promising. We got to sit outside under a trellis of grapevines, the waiter was wonderfully nice and attentive and the food was tasty if not truly fantastic. Brian's steak was absolutely amazing, and the price was not bad. Even portion sizes were well balanced, so that even after dessert neither of us felt stuffed or uncomfortable. Our wonderful day got a festive end!
