9.8.2006 villi viikonloppu

Campsite.
After all this time, we are back, reporting on our adventures. Last weekend we had a sudden illumination of an idea to go camping. Our neighbours and friends wanted to go too, and finally we found a dog-friendly campsite with decent mountain biking trails as well. Henry Coe State Park is usually blisteringly hot in summer, but a cool breeze from the ocean kept us comfortably in the 80s (or even less in the shade). The park is enormous, tens of miles across each way and criscrossed with a few trails and fire roads crawling over the tight folds of the coastal mountain range.

Middle Range Trail
We arrived on Friday evening, and planned to go out on a bike trail on Saturday - with one person and one dog staying back to guard camp. The route was predicted to be tough, and it began with a climb so merciless that we had to push our bikes uphill. The first trails through the forests were pleasant: a gentle climb, a little lake, and then a long beautiful ride on the top of a ridge on a hard path. We descended then from the ridge gradually down to the bottom of the valley. The route had been given four out of five water bottles for difficulty, so I had to get off the bike and walk it where turns were looking a bit too risky. In the valley we found a creek, and then started the most arduous return from a trail I have ever done: pushing bikes up a steep sandy road, with feet and tyres sinking into two or three inches of fine dust. For almost two miles.

Puiden siimekseen. Into the trees.

Pitkä ylämäki on melkein lopussa. At almost the end of the long long climb.
Our biking appetite was quenched all in one go, so we rested in camp for the day, cooking and taking it easy. Karo enjoyed herself quite a bit and napped under bushes. She gave a little token bark at a coyote passing through camp, but that was all. On Sunday the rest of the campers did a hike to the same lake and around, which also had seemed like a lot of uphill considering they returned to the same point again. I would say we made the most of that weekend! (the bike route was about 12 miles, with about 2000 feet of elevation gain).
