Hyvää uutta vuotta! Happy new year!
Lumenkaipuu ajoi meidät - tai siis me ajoimme - Tahoe-järvelle, Nevadan puoleiselle lumirajan reunalle. Vuokramökkimme oli mukava, mikä oli hyvä, sillä kaksi päivää olimme sisällä kaatosadetta kuuntelemassa. Luimme kirjoja, pelasimme lautapelejä, katsoimme leffoja ja laitoimme ruokaa. Lopulta pääsimme myös hiihtämään, ja siellä, yli kahden kilometrin korkeudessa kuuset ja männytkin alkoivat näyttää ihan tasan suomalaismetsältä, vaikkakin varsin vinoon ladotulta. Brian tiesi mitä tarkoitin, kavereista paikka oli eksoottinen. Keli ei kuitenkaan suosinut meitä, ja päätimme palata kotiin päivän etuajassa. Lähdön hetkellä lumimyräkkä alkoi ja pelkäsimme, ettemme ehdi vuoristoteiltä pois ennen tien sulkemista. Sama loistoidea oli pälähtänyt muutamalle tuhannelle muullekin autoilijalle, ja teimme 50 kilometrin matkaa yli kolme tuntia. Keli oli kurja, mutta pääsimme kotiin ilman sen suurempia ongelmia. Nyt väsyttää... Yötä!
Our yearning for snow drove us - actually, we drove ourselves - to lake Tahoe and its Nevadan snowy side. Our rental cabin was very comfy, which was just as well because we stayed in for two days while rain pelted down on us. We read books, played board games, watched movies and cooked good food. Finally we also got to cross country ski. Up there, at over 7000 feet / 2000 m the firs and pines started to look distinctly Finnish, although on a stronger incline than usual. Brian knew what I mean, others thought it was very exotic. The weather did not exactly favour us, so we cut our stay a day short. At the moment of departure the snow storm began and for a moment we feared we might not make it through the mountain passes. The same idea struck several thousands of other drivers, and it took us over three hours to creep across 30 miles. The weather was horrid, but we eventually made it home safe. Yawn... and now it is time for bed!
