Olemme juuri telttailleen neljä päivää Yosemiten luonnonpuistossa, Tuolumne Meadows -nimisellä alueella kahden ja puolen kilometrin korkeudessa kahden kaveripariskunnan kanssa. Telttapaikalle oli soratie, ja palveluina oli juomavettä ja vesivessat pienen kävelyn päässä ja telttapaikalla penkit, pöytä, nuotiopaikka ja peltinen, karhunkestävä ruokalaatikko. Öisin nälkäiset karhut hiipivät etsimään telttapaikoilta syötävää, minkävuoksi kaikki vähänkin ruoannäköinen tai hyvältä haiseva oli aina lukittava laatikkoon. Öisin ilma kylmeni lähelle nollaa, koiran kupissa oli riitettä, päivällä oli lämmintä ja teepaitailma.

We have just returned from four days in Yosemite, where we stayed at a place called Tuolumne Meadows up at about 9000 feet or 2500 meters with two other couples. We could drive right up to the camp site, and the fresh water tap and toilets were close by. Our camp site also had a table and benches, a fire pit and a bear proof metal food locker. At nights the hungry bears tiptoe around the camp sites looking for food, and anything and everything that looks like food or smells good must be locked away. At night the temperature was close to freezing and there was ice in the dog's water bowl in the morning. In the day it was warm, teeshirt weather.

Ensimmäisenä telttapäivänä teimme autoretken Mono -suolajärvelle ja autioituneeseen kultakaivoskaupunkiin nimeltä Bodie Sierra Nevada -vuorten toisella puolella olevalla aavikolla. Toisena päivänä retkeilimme Saddlebag -järven ympärillä kolmen kilometrin korkeudessa. Brian, Karo ja minä kävelimme rauhallista tahtia alppisissa maisemissa ja Karo sai levähtää varjossa aina kun halusi. Kaverimme kiersivät pitkän vaellusreitin, näkivät paljon pieniä järviä ja lampia ja myös vähän lunta. Takaisin tulimme pienellä veneellä järven poikki. Illalla kolme meistä pulahti leirintäalueen vierestä kulkevaan matalaan jokeen, joka oli kirkas mutta aika kylmä!

Kolmantena päivänä kaverimme lähtivät kiertämään pitkää vaellusreittiä Yosemiten alueella. Me päätimme etsiä paikan jossa voisi vähän kiipeillä luonnonpuiston ulkopuolelta - koirat eivät saa tulla puiston reiteille ollenkaan. Saimme hienon neuvon paikkaan, jossa oli komeat kiviseinät ja hieno kiipeillä. Olimme vaan tosi ruosteessa, ja kädet väsyivät pian. Retkeilimme vähän lisää ja sitten palasimme telttapaikalle. Viimeisenä aamuna yksi pariskunta häipyi jo ennen aamunkoittoa, Brian ja Karo jäivät leiriin ja me muut lähdimme vielä kävelylle joenvarteen. Joki on upea, valuu kivien välistä ja sileiden, laakeiden kallioiden yli, vanhoja hiidenkirnuja näkyy siellä täällä, ja hoikkien kuusten välistä näkyy vuorenhuippuja. Sitten pakkasimme kaiken taas autoon ja ajoimme viitisen tuntia takaisin kotiin.

The first camping day we took a trip to the salty Mono lake in the desert beyond the Sierra Nevada, and from there to the ghost town of Bodie, once a gold town of great and dodgy reputation. The second day we went further up to about 3000 meters or 10 000 feet to Saddlebag lake. Karo, Brian and I took our time walking around the lake admiring its alpinesque views, the others took another hike further away to smaller lakes and found even a bit of snow. We returned across the lake in a small boat. In the evening three of us splashed into the clear, shallow and cold waters of the river that runs by the camp site.

On the third day the others went to do a long hike and Brian, Karo and I drove out of the park to do some bouldering. In the park itself dogs are not allowed on the trails (not that Karo would have been up for such a hike, even if she were allowed). The rock faces were great, sunny with interesting grips and tough problems. We were rusty and soon got tired.

On the last morning one couple left as sunrise, Brian and Karo stayed in the camp and we walked up along the river. It is a beautiful river, flowing over smooth glacial rock with dead grey trees across it and with mountains peeking from between the slender firs. Then we packed up and drove home.
