29.8.2005 - viikunapuusta

Yesterday we were over at a friends' house watching telly, and a big screen too. There were six of us all together to watch the first episode of a new series called Rome. The sets are amazingly elaborate and the costumes as well: no wood swords and painted backdrops! As usual, the first episode was full of character introductions, but there was a bit of plot development too: Julius Caesar discovers a betrayal and starts to fight his way to become the emperor. And, although no togas for us, I did bring along a romanesque dessert: fresh figs, pine nuts and yoghurt with honey and black pepper. Those figs came from the store, but our own fig tree in the yard has started to produce figs too! It is a losing battle against the bluejays who go and peck at the fruit, sometimes even before it has properly ripened. I tasted one form the tree and compared it to the storebough fig - ours was tastier! and bigger. Mmm.

Karo also had a fun evening, and so did the cats. At one point they were all three (one dog, two cats) under or around the same table, very purposeful. Every once in a while one of them would forget it was exciting and fall asleep.
