9.6.2005 - neiti naitu
Tästä tulee pitkähkö juttu. This is going to be a bit lengthy.

Brian has some kind of raging stomach bug. We had intended to fly low and disappear for a few days, but moving anywhere very far from a bed and a loo has been impossible. Fortunately we were not far from Elmira when he got ill, for example, we had not driven down to Washington or something of the sort.

The whole wedding do took many days and most everything went just as planned. The friday rehearsal was conducted in slight drizzle and under many umbrellas. After the actual rehearsal was the rehearsal dinner for family and the wedding party. Later, after the dinner, we had a small all-girl martini party, loads of fun. Fortunately we were not out too late, otherwise it would have been catastrophically indistinguishable from a proper bachelorette send-off. The groom had suffered his hangover earlier on the friday, the bride had a very dainty wedding day breakfast and recovered remarkably quickly.
The wedding day itself was opening and closing doors, knock knock, who's there. Everybody was milling about the same house and the rule of the couple not seeing each other was sort of hard to manage. I did sneak a sly peek from the window but we did not see face to face. Otherwise it was doing the hair and writing seating signs and then the flowers arrived and all that stuff. I was mostly removed from the practical matters and sat waiting for the photographer and practiced being pretty.

Yhtäkkiä hetki olikin käsillä... ihmiset olivat kertyneet pihalle ja me neidot hipsimme etupihalle. Kurkimme kulmaikkunoiden kautta ja näimme koko joukon ihmisiä ja vilaukselta sulhasen ja hänen apurinsa. Alkoi ihan kevyesti jännittää. Kuuntelimme kvartetin soittoa (muistaakseni jotain bachia) ja odotimme koska morsiusneitojen kappale alkaa. Sitten kesti pienen ikuisuuden ennenkuin varsinainen sisääntulomarssi alkoi.

Vaan! Naamioidut ritarit tulivat varmistamaan sulhasen todellisten tunteiden laidan ja amerikkalaiset saivat tuta perinteisen morsiamenryöstön! Ei tosin joka kerta venetsialaisissa naamareissa. Lopulta saatiin kakkua (hyvää!) ja Brian väitti saaneensa jalan polkaistua ensin maahan.
Pian tämän jälkeen haltija-apulaiset kävivät sytyttämässä kynttilöistä polun metsään. Minä puin samettiviitan harteilleni, Claire de Lune soi taustalla ja me lähdimme kävelemään käsi kädessä kohti metsänrajaa.

Suddenly it was time! There were a lot of people in the garden and we girls snuck out by the front door to wait for our moment. We peeked through corner windows at the collection of people and even at the groom and his best man. The belly butterflies very quickly hatched and started fluttering. We were listening to the quartet playing Bach and waiting for the music for the bridesmaids. It began, and they walked out... Dad and I waited for the next march to begin. It seemed like half an eternity, but then it was all about trying to relax the shoulder and keep the flowers at waist level and smile. Well, with a hundred people beaming at me, that was the least hard thing to do. We tried to take our time but it was a long march and there was time for much gazing before it was over. The sermon was very very good. Brian forgot his lines, in between the tears running down his face and laughing he had to check them two or three times. I had to blink too and fought hard to have my voice carry all of three feet to him. The front row was doomed - most everybody was weeping without much restraint. I can´t say I remember everything from then, but suddenly it was over and we were walking out, hand in hand to Kuula´s beat. I do remember wanting to break into a sprint at the top of the path out of sheer excitement that everything had gone so perfectly.

After this, we had the formal pictures taken. Families in various groupings, eventually also some of just Brian and me at various locations. Finally we got to socialise and then go to the tent for dinner. It was a fine dinner. we went around the tables talking to people, every once in a while dashing back for the next course and then resuming our circuit. The afternoon light turned to dusk and it was time to cut the cake. But not too soon! the masked villains from Finland ran to the rescue of their sister, demanding from Brian one more proof of his devotion. Soft at heart, the knights in venetian masks agreed to release me to Brian´s tender care.

Brian claims he got the cake cut stomp before I did. He gleefully claims so. Well. Anyway, the cake was good. But night was creeping upon the party and it was time to make our exit. I put on my velvet cape and we both held candle lanterns. Our fairy helpers had lit us a candle path to the forest and with a showering of rice, we followed the path to the maple tree. We turned to wave, and then walked along the path and into the forest, disappearing into the dusk. That was magic.
