28.6.2005 - jännitys alkaa

Enää viikko. Huomenna lähdemme koneella kohti New Yorkia ja sieltä vuokra-autolla Elmiraan. Alamme valmistautua kemuihin. Haetaan perheenjäseniä kentältä ja harjoitellaan vuorosanoja. Puntaroidaan istumajärjestyksiä, laitetaan ohjelmalehdyköitä valmiiksi ja käydään salaa kaapissa katsomassa että mekolla on kaikki hyvin. Istutaan kun aika kuluu kihelmöiden ohi hitaasti mutta liian vikkelään. Käydään mielessä läpi kaikenlaisia listoja asioista joita pitäisi tehdä tai miettiä. Paperiset listat ovat hukassa. Tarkkaillaan pilvitilannetta.

One more week. Tomorrow we fly to New York, rent a minivan and drive to Elmira. Start getting ready. Pick up family from Newark and rehearse our lines. Ponder seating arragements like an impossible mathematical equation. Prepare the programs and sneak to the closet to check that all is well with the dress. Sit, biding time, slow, but far too hasty. Run over lists in the mind of things to do and think about. Paper-based lists are somewhere. Keep an eye on the clouds.

Perjantaina naapurit olivat meillä viinilasillisella - toiset ovat olleen naimisissa kohta kaksi vuotta, toiset vajaan vuoden. Saimme pikku kuoharipullon toisilta naapureilta - herttaista. Meidän on pitänytkin istua iltaa jo pitemmän aikaa. Nyt kun taas olen pitempään poissa, tuntuu haikealta. Voijjettä. Yrtit ja mansikantaimet menivät naapurien luo hoitoon. Pihakukat osuvat juuri uudelleen käynnistyneeseen nurmikonkastelulaitteeseen, ja varmaan pysyvät hengissä ihan hyvin. Toiset naapurit saivat pari ruukullista pian keräyskelpoista rucolaa.

Our neighbours were over on Friday for a glass of wine. Ones have been married almost two years, the others less than a year. The older marrieds gave us a minibottle of sparkling wine - how sweet. We have been meaning to get together for a long time, now it feels almost sad. The herbs and strawberries are at our friends´house in summer care. The sprinklers started working again and will probably keep the flowers alive for a bit longer. The other neighbours got two pots of almost harvestable arugula.

Mitä kuuluu, pitkästä aikaa? Et ole ehtinyt paljon blogia päivittää? - no, onhan tässä ollut kaikkea tekemistä. Muutettiin juuri, ja sitä ennen yritettiin täällä vähän remontoida. 30.4.2006 - vappua!

No niin koitti tännekin kivat kesäilmat vihdoinkin. Lounaseväät kattoterassilla ovat oivallinen tapa katkaista muuten pitkät päivät. Tässä näyttää kovin aurinkoiselta, mutta varjopuolella on vähän viileää vielä. Finally! The warm summery days have arrived here too. Lunch on the sunny roof terrace is a great way to take a break in an otherwise long workday. This looks warm, even hot, but in the shade it is actually still a bit cool. Vappu on kuulemma Suomessa tänä vuonna lämmin ja poutainen! Miten hienoa! Täällä juhlittiin vappuaattoa meidän etupihalla grillaten. Tarjolla oli nakkeja ja perunasalaattia, vihreää salaattia ja jälkkäriksi mansikoita ja jäätelöä. Kavereita tuli niin paljon että tarvittiin naapureidenkin tuolit... Unohdin, harmi vain, ostaa ilmapalloja ja serpentiiniä. Ai niin, kyllä poksautettiin myös pari skumppapulloa. Sen verran siistit juhlat kylläkin, ettei ylioppilaslakkiin tullut yhtään uusia tahroja. Winter -- the second best day of the year

 A few summers ago, I saw an advert in Helsinki that tried to catch the attention of consumers with some brutal honesty. It said: Summer - the best day of the year. For those not in the know, this refers to the frustrating lack of predictability as to when the "heat wave" (anything above 77F) might arrive. And similarly, the frustrating briefness of this warm happy time. Hence - it's the best day of the year.  But for the remaining seasons, there is another highlight - the first snow. This is again based on the terrible trend of more recent years called global warming which last year robbed the very south of the country of any snowy time altogether. So when late last Sunday night (as the forecast has been promising for a few days) temperatures dropped and precipitation became white and fluffy, we looked forward to The Day Of Winter, the second best day of the year.
